A ski bum's guide to fun on and off the mountain

If you’re like us, you’ve been mentally preparing for a new season of fresh powder, vertical drops, and lodge-side hot cocoa since the last remnants of snow left Whiteface Mountain in April. Whiteface Mountain offers snow lovers a quintessential getaway, both on the ground and in the clouds. When you’re not busy shredding up the slopes, come back to earth and discover unique artisans, dining with farm-fresh flair, and local attractions dotting the region. Whether Whiteface is your basecamp, or you’re on a grand tour of the most magnificent ski mountains in the east, we’ve got you covered on how to spend your snow-filled days.

On the mountain

Get there early, but you knew this already. While others are slowly making their way to the mountain, your job is to be seated right on the first chairlift going up (although you might have to compete with us for the first seat). When you purchase a lift ticket, you’re not only getting one mountain, you get three! Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort is made up of three peaks, Whiteface Mountain, Little Whiteface, and Lookout Mountain. Lookout Mountain hosts more intermediate and experienced skiers and snowboarders. For even more expert terrain, "The Slides", gives highly experienced skiers a chance at backcountry-like terrain. This route is only open during optimal weather, so make sure to check before you plan a run! If you're more of a novice, or simply like to spend your days slowly gliding down greens, it's better to avoid these trails for an optimal ski day.

The lodge

After a day in the snow, you and your buds can defrost in the lodge. This isn’t just a place to warm your mitts either. The Base Lodge at Whiteface Mountain is prepared with everything a skier needs. Warm comfort foods in the form of loaded nachos, chili, sandwiches, and more await inside. Broke a binding or lost a ski? The repair and tuning shop can help fix you up. Lounge areas abound indoors and outside, with numerous outdoor fire pits to reconvene after a difficult run, hot cocoa, (the best hot cocoa I’ve ever had) and plenty of cozy spots to regroup and gather your strength for another ride. If you’re waiting for the rest of your group to descend from way up there, you can take your seat by the window inside and watch as skiers bob and weave to the base.

Off the mountain

Even for the most die-hard ski junkies, we all need a rest day - or two! Luckily, the Whiteface Region is stocked with plenty of fun, food, and attractions to keep you occupied while you tend to those sore muscles.

Dining

There’s no shortage of delicious opportunities once you leave the mountain. Around the region, you’ll find cozy pubs perfect for cheersing, delis and diners, and upscale dining for special occasions. The Whiteface Region is proud to partner with local makers and farmers, offering farm-fresh flavors that come right from the neighbors! For a tasty treat, visit the Sugar House Creamery farm store for a little taste of home, in the form of cheeses, meats, breads, maple products, and even merchandise. Before you climb back into the snow, you’ll need breakfast first. Adirondack Mountain Coffee is a refreshing coffee house and cafe, serving up hearty mountain breakfasts, coffee, and sandwiches for those in a rush.

Recoup

Relaxation comes in all forms in the Whiteface Region. For some, it might be a massage at NewVida Preserve, or one of their trainer-led yoga classes to prepare for a day of runs and moguls. For others, some retail therapy may do the trick! Pick up some local pottery from Young’s Studio and Gallery, take home local artwork from the Jay Craft Center, or spoil yourself with a sweet treat from Adirondack Chocolates.

Lodging

For your group, finding the perfect place to rest up for days of skiing is essential. The Whiteface Region holds a wide variety of lodging options, from cozy cabins to hotel stays. NewVida Preserve is the new resort around here that’s sure to impress. NewVida brings with it authentic Adirondack charm, complete with an A-frame lodge offering views of the surrounding mountains, cozy cabin-y rooms, and access to plenty of recreational trails, right off the property!

Try a farm stay

The Whiteface Region may be legendary for its prized skiing and outdoor play, but what you’ll find when you venture beyond the slopes is picturesque farms nestled in the crook of local High Peaks. You and your skiing pals can book a farm stay at Blue Pepper Farm's 30' yurt, a unique way to lodge for your next ski-scapade. The yurt sits atop a 25-acre pasture with views of Whiteface Mountain and neighboring Adirondack mountains. Note that staying in the yurt during the winter season is akin to winter camping, so coming prepared with additional layers, sleeping bags, and firewood is essential. Inside the yurt is a wood stove for heat, a propane stovetop, fridge, outlets, lamps and other light sources for your stay. This experience is for those looking for true adventure, so come prepared! Your reward is the views of a quaint farm surrounded by country scenes blanketed with fresh snow outside.

Grab your skis

The Whiteface Region knows how to host skiers from far and wide, and wants to share the snowy fun with everyone! Enjoy terrain parks, moguls, greens, and double black diamonds on the mountain, and when you’re ready, gear up for some much needed shopping, unique dining, and crafty gifts across the region that’ll make the trip worthwhile.
